Hypecourt

Location: Rabotpark, 9000 Ghent, Belgium

Client/Partner: ASFALT Festival

Created as a centerpiece for ASFALT—Ghent’s flagship street sports and urban culture festival—Lindert Steegen transformed an ordinary grey basketball court in Rabotpark into a vibrant, high-energy hypecourt. Commissioned as a permanent legacy for the neighborhood, the project turns a public sports ground into a dynamic intersection of art, athletics, and community life.

Steegen took the typography of the word “ASFALT” as his starting point, deconstructing its individual letters into abstract geometric shapes and bold planes of color. Viewers navigating the court can still spot subtle fragments of the original lettering woven into the sharp, rhythmic patterns underneath their feet.

“Turning asphalt into a canvas where art and athletics play by the same rules.”

Serving as the main stage for 3x3 basketball tournaments during the festival, the hypecourt remains a lasting landmark for the city. It exemplifies how public art can activate open urban spaces, encouraging youth, athletes, and local residents to meet, play, and engage with visual culture in their daily environment.
